NAME: Dedue Molinaro
CANON: Fire Emblem: Three Houses
CANON POINT: End of Azure Moon but before any epilogues
AGE: 23
BACKGROUND: Character Wiki and Plot Summary
PERSONALITY: It can be easy to be intimidated by Dedue when you first meet him. He's huge to begin with but then he has a stoic demeanor that can almost seem like he's a mean person. He rarely emotes and is unfazed by cruel words directed his way. After all, most of his life has been a series of cruel treatments on his person simply because he is a man of Duscur. So he's, quite frankly, just used to it.
In truth, he is a calm and collected person who actually has a wealth of gentleness and kindness. He's polite and caring towards the well being of others, always putting everyone else before his own needs. Though he's aware that there are those around him who hate him, he does nothing to stir their anger further, believing that people have a right to their anger until old wounds of the heart can be healed. One could call him the shield of the Blue Lions since he will always take the blows for them regardless of what that might mean for his own well being.
There are members of the Lion house who have been truly hurt by the history with the Tragedy of Duscur (examples being Ingrid and Felix). From them he willing accepts their angry words and insults. Yet he will still give his life for them if he needs to, observant that they are just hurting from old hurts and not judging them for that fact. Honestly, he doesn't judge anyone and simply patiently lets them treat him however they need to in order to be alright. Sure that might mean abuses to him but at least they are getting what they might need out of it.
Of course with others such as Ashe, Annette, and Mercedes where we learn more of his gentle nature. He has a fondness for preserving his culture rather than hiding it away. He keeps his people alive through cooking their meals or wearing clothing items of the region. It can be odd to him that people will set aside his genetics to just be friends with him but he's always ready to teach them more about his culture when they ask. How to cook his food, for example. Stories that are passed on from parent to child. The language.
Despite a constant desire to push people away, he does have a longing for friendship. He isn't sure if he quite deserves it but we do know from his talks with people like Dimitri and Sylvain that he does wish for it. There's a longing to deserve, a desire that people will look past where he comes from so he doesn't bring down the reputations of others around him. Like with Byleth though, he doesn't hesitate to warn people that it might not be wise to be seen with him due to what the popular opinion is of his people currently. If he has to sacrifice his desire to be friends to protect others then he will. Their happiness has to come first.
This stern personality doesn't mean that he's without humor though. It's just that it's very dry. Practical and rational though he is, he can dryly tell jokes if you know what to look for. This is most often seen with Shamir. Neither say very much to other people and usually only get straight to the point. But they have an understanding between each other that allows them to joke around freely. At least in a way that only the two of them seem to get.
And all of this brings us to his relationship with Dimitri which is really what defines him as a person. When they were younger, Dimitri was responsible for Dedue's life being spared during the Tragedy. For that reason, he owes him a life debt and is so loyal to him that he has stated he will obey any order the man gives him. Even if it's absolutely obscene and goes against every moral fiber in his being. He struggles to not be at his side seeing to his needs and can often become troubled if he's not near him. Everything in his life is about doing what he can to see to it that Dimitri can live happily.
Dimitri on the other hand has no desire to actually call on that life debt and would just like to be friends with his vassal. This is something that Dedue cannot bring himself to do since being friends with the likes of him could harm the reputation of the man would be king. So instead they have an understanding that Dimitri will work to change the relationship of the people with those of the people of Duscur. To heal old wounds so that they can have peace between them. This vision that Dimitri has means the world to Dedue and he believes that when that day comes that those wounds are healed that he will feel he has the right to call him by his first name rather than just “Your Highness”. There can be no doubt that this man is his most important person. Any order that Dimitri gives him will be followed to the letter and he respects Dimitri all the more for the fact that the man refuses to take advantage of this fact.
All in all he's a very kind and gentle person who tends to remain quiet and keep to himself. He has no desire to fight others but will take any blow meant for another. Especially if it's meant for Dimitri. Do not attempt to harm his liege though or he will fight you. And you had best have magic on your side or he will be an almost unstoppable force.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Dedue's abilities primarily rest in the fact that he acts as a shield. He's a tank essentially. His role is to take the brute force thrown at his companions and keep them safe so they can then take out the enemy in turn. This is why he can actually raise his defense even higher if he simply waits for the enemy to come to him, essentially standing there and brushing off blows without a second thought before smashing the enemy in the face. What you want him there for is to be the body between you and the enemy because he will be able to last.
In terms of other combat skills, he excels with using the axe (his preferred weapon of choice) but also can fight using a lance or even his fists if he needs to. Though slow, he doesn't do well with riding or with flying, possibly because he's too heavy. Then add the heavy armor he's wearing and it's only worse. His real weakness is magic users who can nail him with critical hits. Considering he's terrible with using magic himself and they can attack from a distance, he's best kept away from them entirely. This makes his current class that of a Fortress Knight.
Outside of combat though, one can find he does well as a caretaker. Seeing to the needs of others makes him happy so he is an excellent cook and also a talented gardener. Perhaps his charm skills are low but he still takes care of his friends in whatever way he can.
